Walking with God

Jeremiah 10: 23-24

O LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps. O LORD, correct me, but with judgment; not in thine anger, lest thou bring me to nothing.

Take a moment and consider the similarities with and differences between “God-walking” and “dogwalking”.

  • Similarities: There’s a necessity for implicit trust that the trainer knows the dangers and directions of the path. There’s a reward system for good behaviour and disciplinary action when we get it wrong. Dogs respond well to gentle correction, and positive reinforcement. Brute force will destroy a dog’s spirit. Wisdom is required to get the balance correct.

    There is a need for patience, as any puppy owner would know! There must be a willingness to sacrifice – slippers usually! There is joy in the hearts of the trainer and the dog when the fruits of “obedience school” are realised.

  • Differences: It’s easy to train a dog!

Psalm 143:10 Teach me to do thy will; for thou art my God: thy spirit is good; lead me into the land of uprightness.
